Programme Background

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Education Sector Programme (KESP-II) is a four-year education reform programme funded by UKAid’s Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO), formerly known as Department for International Development (DFID) and the Australian Department for Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) to support the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (GoKP) to achieve an outcome of “more children in school, staying longer, and learning more.” KESP’s technical assistance (TA), delivered by Adam Smith International (ASI), focuses on supporting the government achieve this outcome.

The TA team’s mission is to work at provincial, sub-provincial and school levels to provide comprehensive, flexible and high-quality technical support to the GoKP in the delivery of its strategy and priorities for transforming education service delivery. These priorities primarily focus on (i) improving teaching and learning in KP’s public schools, (ii) improving school infrastructure and facilities, (iii) providing better and more equitable access to education and (iv) strengthening governance and management across the public education sector.

GoKP, with support of KESP TA, is working towards improving student learning outcomes in the province. In order to improve teaching at the primary level, it seeks to develop and provide scripted lesson plans to teachers in Grades 4 and 5 for English, Urdu, Math and English. Given the variable quality of teachers, provision of high-quality scripted lesson plans will help standardize the quality/delivery of lessons to children across the province and boost learning levels. KESP TA has already undertaken an exercise to map out which scripted lesson plans are already available in KP and Punjab and can be adapted/ used here and which are not available and need to be developed from scratch.
